The eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the 1990s was one of the most dangerous calamities to strike the Philippines. This calamity, which nearly devastated the entire city, pushed Americans out and forced the closure of the Clark Air Base, causing insurmountable hardship for the individuals and the country's economy.

The calamity, however, did not shatter the spirit of the people due to their perseverance. And with the resounding cry of "Agyu Tamu! ", the mayor of the City at that time, was able to establish the inaugural Tigtigan Terakan Keng Dalan in order to motivate the people to do more than just survive, but to rise above the calamity. The inaugural event took place little over four months following the catastrophe. It was a huge success, lifting the cloud of mourning that had been cast over Mount Pinatubo's explosion.

Every last Friday and Saturday in October, Pampanga has a street festival with dance and singing. Numerous people regard this as the local equivalent of Mardi Gras. With performances by local famous bands and food vendors serving a variety of cuisines, there is plenty to keep the numerous guests amused all day!
